The successor to John Paul II has been elected, Vatican Radio announced Tuesday evening. Bells chimed at St. Peter's Basilica and tens of thousands of flag-waving pilgrims filled the square, chanting: "Viva il Papa!" or "Long live the pope!"

Pope John Paul II's condition is "very grave"

Pope John Paul II's condition is "very grave" and has taken a turn for the worse, with his kidneys not functioning properly and his breath shallow. The 84-year-old pontiff suffers from physical problems associated with his age and with Parkinson's disease and is said to be aware he is near death.
